Cooking Tips 1

I’ll be sharing a selection of useful themed cooking tips with you each week. The tips will include everything from ways to save money in the kitchen to cooking hints and leftover ideas plus much much more. My own personal cooking techniques have greatly improved over time from implementing various cooking tips that I have learned along the way. This week we take a look at some general cooking tips.

  • Keep a conversion table handy by sticking it to the inside of your kitchen cupboard door to be used as a quick reference
  • Use standard olive oil for general cooking and extra virgin when the flavor of the oil is important to the dish
  • Soak bamboo skewers in water for at least 30 minutes before you use them or cover the ends in foil to stop them from burning
  • Mushrooms shrink to about a third of their original raw size so allow for this when cooking with them
  • To maximize the tenderness of your meats, always cut across the grain
  • Spice lovers can add whole green chilies to their family meals. When whole, the chill doesn’t permeate throughout dish, so simply serve the chili to those who want some spice and they can chop it finely and mix it through their meal
  • Make a stainless steel pan nonstick by heating the pan over a very high heat or flame before using it
  • Taste your recipe along the way and season or adjust as required
  • Before you sear or cook any type of meat, you always want to make sure it’s completely dry by patting it try with paper towel as water, or moisture of any kind, will not allow for a good, clean sear or caramelization to occur
  • Frozen berries make great smoothies. Whiz some raspberries with a few dollops of vanilla yoghurt in the blender for a thick, ice-cream-like texture that the whole family will love
